Grand Island has a mayor-council form of government by which policy and ordinances are determined to run city government. Grand Island became a city in 1872 and currently has a population of over 50,000 with a Metropolitan Statistical Area of 83,472.
Grand Island is the county seat of Hall County. County government is overseen by seven elected supervisors forming a board to establish policy for governing the county. Established in 1858, Hall County is the fourth most populous county in Nebraska.
