This annual event spotlights the benefits that internships offer students and employers by playing a key role in developing future talent. Grand Island is one of Nebraska’s top communities for internships thanks to the city’s rapidly expanding economy and high quality of life. In recent years, Grand Island and its business community have dedicated significant resources to attract and retain young professionals — an initiative that is paying dividends as Grand Island's median age is under 35. Read moreCindy K. JohnsonMonday, February 5, 2024For years, with the exception of the Senators representing Grand Island, our community did not have a strong presence in the Legislature. This changed in 2022 when Grow Grand Island and your Chamber of Commerce engaged a lobbying and government relations firm to assist with securing funds for the Wayne State College Cooperative Education/Internship Program. With the leadership of Senator Ray Aguilar and the lobbyists’ day-by-day dedication, we were able to secure funding for our internship program. As a quick summation, students in the Cooperative Internship Program attend Wayne State College during their Freshman-Junior years and complete their education with paid Senior-year internships at Grand Island businesses. Students receive education scholarships and a housing scholarship while completing their internship. This initiative introduces potential employees to the entire scope of careers and lifestyles that Grand Island has to offer. Our first group of interns will be stationed in Grand Island businesses beginning the fall of 2025. Businesses – large and small – make decisions daily about their operations and labor is always one of the top considerations. To this end, the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and Grow Grand Island are collaborating with Wayne State College (WSC) to bring potential talent (college seniors) to the community via the Careers Scholars Cooperative Education Program. This program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience and a pathway to successful careers. Students spend three years studying at WSC, followed by a year of paid internship at local Grand Island businesses. In those 36 years, I’ve watched Grand Island grow from a cornfield-lined Highway 281 city of 35,000 people to a population of approximately 51,000 people and an ever-growing corridor.
