Businesses – large and small – make decisions daily about their operations and labor is always one of the top considerations. To this end, the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and Grow Grand Island are collaborating with Wayne State College (WSC) to bring potential talent (college seniors) to the community via the Careers Scholars Cooperative Education Program. This program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience and a pathway to successful careers. Students spend three years studying at WSC, followed by a year of paid internship at local Grand Island businesses. We see it every day, drive by it routinely, and it doesn’t stand out to us as anything out of the ordinary. However, I recently had the opportunity to provide a tour of our community to an individual interested in a position in Grand Island. One of the first things he observed was how in every quadrant of the community, growth activity was occurring. It caused me to pause and acknowledge that it takes someone from outside of the community to recognize what is right under our noses. In those 36 years, I’ve watched Grand Island grow from a cornfield-lined Highway 281 city of 35,000 people to a population of approximately 51,000 people and an ever-growing corridor. Like most businesses do, I subscribe to the belief that if you aren’t growing, you are dying. The meeting was sponsored by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry. More than a dozen people attended the hourlong meeting where they focused on concerns and opportunities that need to be addressed to keep the community growing.
